North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea Thursday morning.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS), the missiles were fired at 5:20 a.m. from North Hwanghae Province towards Wonsan, Gangwon Province, flying about 500 kilometers. The JCS said they appeared to be Scud missiles.

This marks the first time Pyongyang has fired short-range ballistic missiles this year, although the North tested rounds of its latest multiple launch rocket system into the East Sea last Thursday.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it was monitoring the situation and is prepared to react to any provocations from the North.

The South's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is reviewing ways to respond and whether the latest incident violates United Nations Security Council Resolution 1695 that bans Pyongyang from firing any projectile using ballistic missile technology.
