Lee Se-dol Braces for Match with AlphaGo

World champion Lee Se-dol has remained prudent ahead of his match in the game of Go, or baduk in Korean, against Google's artificial intelligence(AI) AlphaGo.

At a news conference in Seoul on Tuesday, he expressed confidence but dismissed the possibility of his defeating Google DeepMind's AlphaGo 5-0.

The world Go champion made the remarks upon learning about the algorithm of AlphaGo, saying that the artificial intelligence machine could mimic human intuition to some extent.

Lee said that he might make inevitable mistakes as a human being to lose the match, but said he will do his best to beat AlphaGo in all of the five matches and preserve the "beauty" of baduk.

Also at the news conference, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, who is visiting South Korea to watch the match, said that Wednesday—the first day of the match—will become "a great day for humanity."

He added that mankind will be the winner, regardless of the match results.

South Korean Go master Lee accepted in late January the challenge to battle against AlphaGo. The five-game challenge match will run from Wednesday through next Tuesday in Seoul.
