The government announced on Monday that South Korea will participate in a new project surveying Arctic marine use pursued by the Arctic Council.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said it will take part in the project called “Arctic Marine Indigenous Use Mapping” pushed by the Arctic Council working group on the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment.
The Arctic Marine Indigenous Use Mapping project is aimed at data mapping the marine environment use of eight Arctic villages in the Aleutian Islands and drawing up guidelines that will be needed when making future policies related to the Arctic.
A meeting marking the launch of the project will be held in Anchorage, Alaska on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Korea Maritime Institute and the Aleut International Association(AIA) will attend the meeting. The AIA, which is supervising the project, is a nonprofit organization that was set up in 1998 to represent the interests of some eight-thousand natives of the extended Aleut family residing in the U.S. and Russia.
