S. Korean Fishing Vessels Can Catch Tuna in N. Atlantic

South Korean fishing vessels can now fish for tuna in the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Friday that Seoul received approval for the fishing operations this year during a recent meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, held in Spain.

South Korea's tuna quota for the North Atlantic is 163 tons. Two to three fishing vessels will be mobilized for the catch.

Until now, South Korean fishing boats mainly operated in the fish-rich Pacific Ocean.

The Seoul government expects a seven-billion-won profit from the tuna haul in the North Atlantic this year, with the majority of fish caught expected to be consumed as sushi or sashimi.
