China Begins Banning Mineral Imports from N. Korea in Dandong

A leading Japanese daily said Wednesday that China began from Tuesday banning imports of minerals from North Korea at some Chinese ports.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun quoted a trade official in the Chinese city of Dandong as saying port authorities sent out a notification stipulating that imports of minerals from the North will be prohibited.

The daily said that around 70 vehicles from the North entered China on Tuesday after passing through one of China's customs checkpoints on the Dandong side of the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, but that none of them were carrying cargo that looked like coal.

The report said that just a day before, 130 trucks from the North were approved to go through by Dandong customs officials and that a number of them were carrying minerals.

The daily quoted a Chinese customs official as saying that the deliveries came after taking into consideration that such moves will be banned from Wednesday.

The UN Security Council draft resolution that is set to be adopted on Wednesday local time, bans mineral resources trade with the North.

As a result, the daily said that China began moving fast before efforts to adopt the resolution were made.
