KCNA: Detained American Apologized for His Crimes

North Korean media say that an American college student detained in North Korea has apologized for his crimes.

The state-run Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) reported that Otto Warmbier held a news conference at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang on Monday.

According to the report, the 21-year-old University of Virginia student admitted he tried to steal a political banner from a staff-only area of the Yanggakdo International Hotel last month.

The report claimed that Warmbier apologized and begged for the forgiveness from the North Korean people and government.

CNN also covered the latest story, saying that the news conference was held at Warmbier’s own request.

Warmbier was visiting North Korea on a tour package and was arrested at Pyongyang Airport on January second.

KCNA had reported then that he “was caught committing a hostile act against the state orchestrated by the U.S. government.” It did not elaborate further.

Currently, North Korea is known to be holding three Westerners including Warmbier.
