South Koreans’ credit card spending abroad reached a new high while credit card purchases by foreigners in the country fell in 2015.
The Bank of Korea(BOK) said South Koreans last year spent 15 trillion won, or about 13-point-three billion U.S. dollars, abroad using their credit cards. The figure is an eight-point-seven percent rise from a year earlier.
The central bank added that credit card spending by foreigners in South Korea last year fell to about ten billion dollars, a 13-point-two percent drop from 2014.
BOK officials said the slump is likely due to the six-point-eight percent fall in the number of foreign tourists last year compared to 2014. About 13-point-23 million foreign visitors came to South Korea last year.
The drop in visitors, meanwhile, was attributed to the spread of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome(MERS) in South Korea last summer and the weak Japanese yen that attracted more Chinese tourists to Japan.
