The Japanese government has canceled an event in Seoul aimed at promoting tourist sites and products from the Fukushima and Kagoshima prefectures.

Tokyo's Foreign Ministry said the two-day event was planned to take place at a shopping mall at the Wangsimni subway station in Seoul's Seongdong District to promote specialty products from the Japanese prefectures in order to attract South Korean tourists. 

The event was also scheduled to showcase the Japanese government's efforts to recover from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and resulting tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster.

A ministry official said the event was canceled because the South Korean government refused to grant permission for the event.
