South Korean scientists have welcomed the detection of gravitational waves by the Ligo Scientific Collaboration(LSC).

Lee Hyung-mok, a professor of Seoul National University’s Astronomy-Physics Department, and other members of the Korean Gravitational-Wave Group(KGWG) held a press conference in Myeong-dong, central Seoul, Friday.

The scientists touted the detection as ushering in the era of gravitational-wave astronomy.

LSC, which consists of researchers from 13 countries, announced in Washington D.C. Thursday that they succeeded in detecting gravitational waves, confirming one of Albert Einstein's predictions made a century earlier.

The breakthrough discovery made with the help of Ligo, or the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, is deemed to open a new window to the universe.

Lee and 13 other members of the KGWG participated in the discovery, having their names listed as co-authors of the LSC’s paper on the matter.
