The bid to establish a fisheries college in South Korea affiliated with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) has begun.
The college will aim to become a graduate school offering master's and doctoral degrees to those from underdeveloped and developing countries with ample marine resources. The goal is to open the school in 2017.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Busan, Jeju Island and South Chungcheong Province have applied to establish the school after the ministry invited all 17 cities and provinces nationwide to bid for the project.
The winning bid will be announced on February 19th following a three-day review beginning on the 15th.
The appraisal will look into financial support plans, the prospective site of the school and the local government's capacity for international cooperation. The condition for establishing the school is to provide half of its annual operating expenses, which is estimated to be about seven billion won.
