Navigational Warnings in Effect Ahead of N. Korean Rocket Launch

The government has warned ships and planes to avoid travelling through areas where North Korean rocket fragments are expected to fall.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said it told the country’s merchant marines and fisheries cooperatives to refrain from going to waters off Gunsan, South Jeolla Province, and the western coast of Jeju Island.

Ministry officials will run a 24-hour monitoring system and warn ships in the areas via satellite phones.

Officials at the transport ministry, meanwhile, diverted flight routes of passenger planes regularly travelling between China and Jeju.

The navigational alerts come after North Korea informed world agencies it would launch a satellite sometime between February eighth and 25th. Pyongyang said debris from the launched vehicle could fall in areas off South Korea's west coast.
