BOK Governor Notes Growing Importance of Chinese Economy

Bank of Korea(BOK) Governor Lee Ju-yeol has vowed to monitor the Chinese economy more closely, citing the growing impact of the Asian country on the global economy.

The South Korean central bank chief on Wednesday held a monthly meeting with economists.

Lee said that the Chinese economy is at a phase to assume the role previously held by the U.S., noting that the course of the international economy had depended on the U.S.' economic performance.

Lee said the Chinese economy has contributed more to the world economy than the American economy, citing China's 35 percent contribution to global growth over the past ten years.

He added South Korea needs to pay more attention to China not only because it is the largest export market for the country, but also because it has a significant influence on the global economy.

Commenting on the World Economic Forum held in Davos last week, where both optimistic and worrying outlooks were expressed about the Beijing economy, the BOK chief said there is great uncertainty and uneasy sentiment surrounding the subject.
