Cold Snap Brings Coldest Winter Day

Temperatures fell across the country on Tuesday to the lowest levels so far of the ongoing winter season.

By region, Seoul’s morning lows recorded minus 15-point-one degrees Celsius, or roughly four-point-eight degrees Fahrenheit. However, it had a wind chill factor of minus 24-point-four degrees Celsius.

The coldest region of the nation was Seorak Mountain in Gangwon Province, where the mercury plummeted to minus 27-point-nine degrees.

Daegwallyeong mountain pass in Gangwon posted minus 19-point-seven degrees, while the wind chill factor recorded as low as minus 35-point-three degrees.

Daejeon recorded minus eleven-point-two degrees, while the southeastern port city of Busan saw the temperature fall to minus five-point-four.

Most regions will stay below freezing during the daytime, with afternoon highs climbing to minus eight degrees in Seoul, minus three in Daegu and minus one at Gwangju.

The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) said the current cold snap will continue to grip the nation for some time, forecasting morning lows of minus 13 degrees for Seoul on Wednesday.

A cold wave warning has been issued in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province, western Gangwon Province and Jecheon in North Chungcheong Province.

A lower cold wave watch is in effect for most parts of the central region, including Seoul, as well as North Gyeongsang Province.
