Foreign Stock Ownership Hits 6.5-Year Low

Foreign ownership of South Korean stocks reached a six-and-a-half year low.

The Korea Exchange said on Sunday that foreign investors held 403-point-one trillion won worth of stocks traded on the main bourse and the tech-heavy KOSDAQ market as of Thursday, or 28-point-71 percent of the total market capitalization.

The percentage was the lowest level since August 18, 2009, when the figure reached 28-point-65 percent.

Foreigners sold off Korean stocks every day over the past 30 trading sessions since December 2.

Analysts attributed the foreign sell-offs to a growing negative outlook on emerging markets and the weakening Korean currency against the U.S. dollar.
