North Korea is reportedly planning to make another bid to host an international weightlifting event.

Radio Free Asia(RFA) quoted an official of the International Weightlifting Federation(IWF) on Friday as saying that the North’s weightlifting federation last month expressed intentions to host a junior or youth weightlifting event sanctioned by the IWF.

According to RFA, the North told the IWF that the country has facilities qualified to host an international weightlifting competition, namely the Ryugyong Chung Ju-yung Gymnasium in Pyongyang, and is ready to hold an event in two to three years' time.

The news came nine months after the North failed in its bid to host the 2017 junior world championships, for which it competed with four other countries including Japan.

The North has not held an international weightlifting event since 1979.
