Hyundai Motor Group is carrying out research and development of unmanned, cutting-edge weapons.
The move comes as the possibility of North Korean provocations against South Korea is growing, following Pyongyang’s fourth nuclear test.
Hyundai Rotem, a subsidiary of the motor group, is working on a future combat vehicle platform and a technology on controlling both manned and unmanned self-driving cars.
Starting from next year, the subsidiary firm plans to produce more than 600 amphibious, wheel-typed armored cars that can run at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
Hyundai Motor's affiliate Kia Motors, on its part, plans to produce remotely controlled weapons systems and a new, small-sized tactical vehicle that has bulletproof tires.
Hyundai Motor Group is also developing a robot that can detect mines and have combat and reconnaissance capabilities, as well as a wearable robot that would multiply the physical strength of the wearer by 14 times.
