New Technique to Cut Long-Horned Beetles Proliferation by 28 Months

The Korea National Arboretum said it developed a technique on proliferating en masse endangered Korean long-horned beetles.

The long-horned beetle, whose scientific name is callipogon relictus, is registered as South Korea’s Natural Monument Number 218.

It takes five to seven years for the endangered beetles to proliferate naturally. The current artificial proliferation technique reduced the period to 44 months, while the newly developed technique will cut the period by another 28 months to one year and four months.

The arboretum said though the technique was developed using beetles imported from China, it could be immediately applied to Korean long-horned beetles once they are collected.

The technique is expected to be of great help in ecological research regarding the beetles, including their egg-laying habits and flight capacities.
