Samsung Electronics to Establish Ombudsman Committee to Prevent Work-Related Diseases

An independent ombudsman committee and a healthcare center will be established to resolve one of the three issues in the conflict between Samsung Electronics and its former employees diagnosed with leukemia.

Samsung Electronics' arbitration body on Tuesday announced the agreement on measures to prevent work-related illnesses, which was reached among the company, families of leukemia patients and Banolim, an advocacy group for workers at semiconductor factories.

Under the agreement, Samsung will set up an independent ombudsman committee outside the firm to review workplace safety. The new committee will be headed by Lee Cheol-soo, a labor law professor at Seoul National University.

Samsung Electronics will also strengthen its internal system to manage and prevent work-related diseases.

As part of the efforts, the company will expand the organization and role of an internal healthcare team while opening a healthcare center for its workers.

Samsung also plans to conduct research on work-related diseases through a health affairs institute.

The complete solution to the eight-year conflict may take longer, as the two other issues—apology and compensation—have yet to be solved.
