The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held an emergency meeting to address rising safety concerns following a recent spate of flight glitches on low-cost carriers.
During Friday's meeting where the representatives of local airliners were also present, Second Vice Land Minister Choi Jeong-ho noted that it is essential for such carriers to come up with high standards of safety management and maintenance that commensurate with their expanding businesses.
Choi warned authorities will sternly deal with low-cost carriers if they are caught violating safety standards with measures such as issuing temporary flight suspensions and cancelling certification.
The ministry plans to conduct a special inspection on six local budget airliners for two weeks beginning Monday to scrutinize their overall safety systems.
Last month, Jeju Air reported a malfunction of cabin pressure control, while one of Jin Air's planes flying from Cebu to Busan was forced to turn back due to a problem with one of its doors.
