'Kim Jong-un's New Year's Speech Stressed Economy Over Military'

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un appears to have stressed economic growth over military power in his New Year’s speech.

Director Cheong Seong-chang of Sejong Institute's Unification Strategy Studies noted that Kim's speech mentioned the North's military-first policy—widely known as the songun policy—only twice, four times less compared to his speech in 2013.

Cheong added that Kim explained his policies on the economy before those on defense, an indication that Kim would prioritize economy this year.

Kim also referred to North Korea founder Kim Il-sung and late leader Kim Jong-il eleven times in his New Year’s speech. Kim had referred to his predecessors 47 times in 2013.
