Drinking, Smoking, Obesity Cost S. Korea 23 Trillion Won

A recent survey has found that drinking, smoking and obesity cost South Korea trillions of won in related health and socioeconomic expenditures.

A National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) study disclosed on Monday that ill effects of the three factors caused 23-point-three trillion won, or 19-point-eight billion U.S. dollars, in 2013.

Drinking alone accounted for nine-point-five trillion won, or around eight billion US dollars. Related costs from smoking were seven-point-one trillion won while that from obesity was six-point-eight trillion won.

NHIS researchers have calculated socioeconomic costs sparked by the three factors every two years since 2005.

The numbers have been on the rise, growing from 13-point-five trillion won in 2005. The tally surpassed 20 trillion won in 2009 and marked 21-point-six trillion won in 2011.
