Seoul Dismisses Suspicions over Kim Yang-gon's Death

A South Korean government official has dismissed suspicions over the recent death of North Korean Workers’ Party Secretary Kim Yang-gon.

Amid media speculation about other possible causes of death, a Unification Ministry official said Thursday that the most convincing intelligence points to Kim having died after his car collided with a military truck.

The official said car accidents involving collisions with military trucks occur frequently in the North, citing that the vehicles have a narrow field of vision and often travel at dawn or in the late hours.

Following North Korean media reports of Kim's death, an organization in South Korea supporting North Korean escapees said Kim was returning to Pyongyang after inspecting factories at Sinuiju, and died at the scene of the collision.
