South, North Buddhist Leaders Exchange New Year's Letters

South Korea’s largest Buddhist sect has exchanged letters with the North's Buddhist federation hoping for more exchanges between the two sides in the new year.

The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism's Ven. Jaseung expressed the sentiment in a letter to the head of the North’s Buddhist federation Kang Su-rin on Wednesday.

Jaseung said that 2015 was a year when the spirit of solidarity and unity increased even more among Buddhists from the South and North. He called on the two sides to make greater efforts in 2016 to realize more exchanges and achieve national reconciliation and unity.

In his letter, Kang noted that there had been consistent activities aimed at unity among Buddhists in 2015, confirming the desire for reunification. He said he is convinced that solidarity among Buddhists will strengthen in the new year, helping to improve inter-Korean relations and achieve national reconciliation and unity.

Jaseung and Kang met in Shenyang, China last March and again in the North's Mount Geumgang in October and November.
