A satellite image shows that the base for North Korea’s fishing operations in far-off seas is close to completion.
Curtis Melvin, a researcher at the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, released the satellite image photographed on October 19.
In an interview with Radio Free Asia (RFA), the U.S. researcher said that the May 27 Fishery Station in an east coastal area is equipped with a wharf, breakwater, fishery refrigeration facilities, a processing plant as well as lodging for its workers on the site measuring 55-thousand square meters.
The RFA said that roads connecting the plant to buildings have been completed and the length of the wharf was recently extended to one kilometer from 86 meters.
In his inspection of the construction site in March, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stressed that the construction of the fishery station is important not just for the diet of the people but for the welfare of North Korean soldiers.
