North Korean media highlighted what Pyongyang regards as former leader Kim Jong-il’s nuclear development achievements on Thursday, which marked the 24th anniversary of his ascension to supreme commander.
 
A propaganda outlet said the North succeeded in carrying out underground nuclear tests thanks to Kim’s perfect wisdom and technique, adding that the nuclear tests were a major celebration for the North Korean people.
 
According to the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North's ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, the North was able to guard its dignity and sovereignty due to the nuclear sword that Kim had provided.
 
The North carried out two nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, during Kim’s reign.
