Gov't to Increase Aid to Sex Slavery Victims

The government will sharply increase funds to support the daily expenses and nursing costs for victims of Japan's wartime sex slavery.

The Finance Ministry said Tuesday that considering that most of the victims are financially destitute, it has decided to increase the monthly aid by 21 percent to one-point-26 million won per month beginning next year.

Over the years, the government aid has been raised by about three percent each year.

Support for nursing and caregiving expenses will also be raised by nearly 40 percent next year to an average of over one million won a month.

Forty-six South Korean victims of Tokyo's wartime sexual slavery currently survive with an average age of 89.
