3.9 Earthquake Hits Western Part of Peninsula

A magnitude three-point-nine earthquake has hit an area eight kilometers north of Iksan, North Jeolla Province.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said Tuesday that the tremor hit the western part of the Korean Peninsula at around 4:30 Tuesday morning.

The KMA said that the quake was the strongest to hit the inland areas of the country this year.

Many people in the North Jeolla city felt the tremor with reports coming in from as far as South Chungcheong Province, Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.

The North Jeolla Provincial fire department said that it received around 100 reports from citizens, but no reports of damage or casualties.

The KMA said it is possible that aftershocks with magnitudes of between two and three will take place in the region. It said that aftershocks would not pose a threat to public safety.

So far, 44 earthquakes have hit South Korea this year, including three of magnitude three-point-five or stronger.

The strongest quake to strike the county occurred in 1978 near Songnisan National Park in North Chungcheong Province. It was measured to be five-point-two on the Richter scale.

The weather agency earlier assessed the magnitude of Tuesday’s quake to be three-point-five, but raised it to three-point-nine after further analysis.
