BOK Chief Dispels Concerns of Negative Impact from US Rate Hike

Bank of Korea Governor Lee Ju-yeol said Thursday that negative impact from the U.S. rate hike on the domestic financial market is not particularly concerning.

Speaking to reporters, the central bank chief said the U.S. rate hike was long anticipated and is expected to have little impact on the local finance market. He also noted U.S. Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen's remark that the process of normalizing interest rates is likely to proceed gradually.

The governor also said the Korean economy's foreign loan structure is stabilizing as it's moving from short-term toward more mid-to-long term loans.

He added that the country's internal conditions are not especially difficult.

Lee however cautioned that South Korea must continue to watch out for other variables such as the falling global oil price and the Chinese economy.
