Researchers Develop Semiconductor Device that Replicates Human Brain

South Korean researchers have developed a semiconductor device which simulates the complex and delicate neural network of a human brain.

The research team, led by Professor Hwang Hyun-sang of Pohang University of Science and Technology, said it made a device replicating a neuron with a material that may switch from a non-conductive to conductive metal and placed a conducting oxide which acts as a synapse on the device.

The new semiconductor device is thought to be a key technology for neuromorphic systems, which allow the simultaneous processing and storage of various pieces of information similar to a human brain.

The research was presented at the recently ended International Electron Devices Meeting Conference 2015 in the United States.
