Inter-Korean Vice-Ministerial Talks Begin

Anchor: The two Koreas began their first regular governmental meeting under the Park Geun-hye administration on Friday. South Korea is expected to place priority on resolving the issue of separated families, while the North is expected focus on resuming tourism to Mount Geumgang.
Kim Bum-soo reports.

Report: South and North Korea began vice-ministerial talks at the North's Gaeseong Industrial Complex on Friday.

The first general meeting, which began around 10:40 a.m., lasted about 30 minutes. The two sides will resume the meeting after having lunch separately.

The talks are led by three officials from each side. Vice Unification Minister Hwang Boo-gi is heading the South's delegation while the North's chief delegate is Jon Jong-su, vice director of the secretariat of the North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea.

Hwang told reporters before setting off for the meeting that the two sides have many issues to resolve.

"(We) have got to take part in the first South Korea-North Korea inter-governmental talks. Between the North and South, there are many issues to be discussed and resolved. (We will) do our best to resolve each issue one-by-one, step-by-step."

Unification Ministry Spokesman Jeong Joon-hee said last month that the agenda will include pending issues to improve inter-Korean relations. The two Koreas are expected to brief each other on their views and positions at the first meeting rather than reaching an agreement on specific issues.

Since the launch of the Park Geun-hye administration in 2013, the two sides have held one-off meetings to resolve urgent disagreements.

But as Korea University Professor Nam Sung-wook says, the latest meeting is significant in that it is the first time in almost three years that the two Koreas are holding regular talks to discuss pending concerns.

"It will be the first governmental meeting since the August 25 agreement and it will work as the first regular inter-Korean governmental talks."

South Korea is expected to place priority on resolving the issue of separated families, while the North is expected to focus on resuming tourism to Mount Geumgang.
