Rival Parties Pass Five Contentious Bills

Rival parties passed five contentious bills along with next year's budget proposal on Thursday.

The National Assembly speaker executed his authority and bypassed the legislative committee to submit the bills for plenary votes.

The ruling Saenuri Party-backed tourism promotion bill allows companies to build hotels near schools. The authorization is limited to five years and to Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.

A medical bill aimed at attracting more patients from overseas, supported by the ruling party, also passed.

The parties also passed a bill backed by the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy, which calls for protecting dairy and other product dealers from unfair suppliers.

The parties also passed bills to establish public postnatal care centers and to improve the labor conditions of medical doctors in residential training.
