S. Korea to Introduce Drought Warning System

The government will introduce a system of issuing warnings against droughts from next year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it will expand the Han River Flood Control Office's River Information Center into a Water Resources Information Center. Beginning in January, the new unit will be in charge of monitoring and issuing alerts against droughts.

The land ministry will also establish a drought analysis center at state-run water resources company K-Water to examine water usage around the nation in real time. The unit will provide the information to related ministries and local governments.

A land ministry official said the drought alerts will begin in January for the Seoul metropolitan and Chungcheong regions, where spring droughts are expected. It will then expand to the entire nation by the end of next year.
