Pedestrians Account for 76% of Fatalities in Bus, Taxi Accidents

A public organization says that 76 percent of those killed in taxi or bus accidents in Seoul were pedestrians.

The Korea Transportation Safety Authority said on Tuesday that 300 people were killed in traffic accidents involving taxis or buses in Seoul over the past three years. Seventy-six percent or 228 of the fatalities were pedestrians.

The seven most accident-prone areas for accidents involving buses were all located close to bus stations which use a bus lane.

In cases of accidents involving taxis, seven of eleven accident-prone spots were located near subway stations.

The authority said that people are often killed in accidents while jaywalking near bus stations with bus lanes as the crosswalks are usually shorter than ordinary pedestrian crossings.

It said that accidents involving taxis are frequent near subway stations as they are common locations for people to catch taxis.
