Domestic Institute Develops Technology for Capturing and Storing CO₂

The Korea Institute of Energy Research announced on Monday that it developed a technology which can capture and store carbon dioxide.

The institute under the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning developed the technology after five years and handed it over to a small company named "Giban."

The technology can be installed in small- and mid-sized facilities that emit carbon dioxide, which is considered to be the key cause of global warming.

The technology filters carbon dioxide discharged from chimneys of power plants and factories with a special liquid absorbent and captures the greenhouse gas. The captured carbon dioxide is then stored and used as photosynthetic material for crops, as a welding substance or as a refrigerant.

The institute said the technology is expected to significantly help domestic firms as it describes in detail the process of capturing the greenhouse gas.
