N. Korea Declares No-Sail Zone in E. Sea Possibly for Missile Launch

North Korea has declared a no-navigation zone in the East Sea, possibly indicating a missile launch.

A South Korean military official said Sunday that North Korea declared a no-sail zone covering a wide area of water in the East Sea near Wonsan, Gangwon Province effective from November 11 to December 7.

The official said that attention is drawn to a possible short-range missile launch.

He said the North could launch a Scud, a new type of ballistic missile or a submarine-launched ballistic missile.

But the official added that a long-range missile launch is not as likely as no particular moves have been detected near the North's Dongchangri missile site in Cheorwon, North Pyeongang Province.

Since its land mine and shelling provocations in August, the North declared no-sail zones in the East Sea every month and even deployed ship-to-ship missiles and 300-millimeter multiple rocket launchers on the shore but stopped short of actually firing any rockets.
