New Minister for Oceans and Fisheries Kim Young-suk has placed top priority on the safety of passenger ships.
 
Kim made the remarks in his inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, saying that he will devise comprehensive measures to ensure safety at sea, based on lessons learned from massive maritime disasters such as the sinking of the Sewol ferry.  
 
He also announced plans to develop fisheries into a future-oriented industry, promote a marine-friendly culture and upgrade the nation’s fishing villages, ports and marinas.
 
With 30 years of experience in the maritime and port industry, Kim was promoted to minister from vice minister in a partial Cabinet reshuffle.
