President Park Geun-hye expressed hope that South Korean, China and Japan will normalize a trilateral cooperative relationship and establish a true partnership to promote peace and cooperation in Northeast Asia.
The president made the remarks on Sunday in her opening statement to a trilateral summit with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the presidential office.
Park said that the tripartite summit will serve as a big step toward peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia.
She said that economic interdependence among the three nations is increasing, but they are not fully cooperating due to unresolved issues in politics and security.
The Chinese premier said that the three sides could actively pursue cooperation after dealing with history and other sensitive issues properly.
Li called on Park and Abe to work to increase mutual trust and enhance bilateral exchanges and cooperation to ensure that a trilateral cooperative system will not collapse again.
The Japanese prime minister said that together with Park and Li, he will take a new step towards cooperation among the three nations.
Abe assessed that with the three-way summit, the trilateral cooperative system has normalized. Abe also vowed to ensure that the constructive discussions will lead to the next trilateral summit set for next year in Japan.
