Agreement to Allow S. Korea's Exports of Rice, Samgyetang to China

South Korea and China have reached an agreement on inspection rules regarding exports of South Korea’s rice and "samgyetang," a Korean ginseng chicken soup to China.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Sunday that the two nations reached the agreement on the occasion of a bilateral summit between President Park Geun-hye and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The Seoul government has been asking China to allow its exports of samgyetang and rice since 2006 and 2009, respectively, but China’s strict quarantine and hygiene rules have blocked the exports.

The ministry said that China is the world’s largest rice market and rice consumption in China is increasing recently. It also hoped that exports of samgyetang to China will ease oversupply of chicken in the domestic market.
