S. Korean Shipbuilders Have Top 5 Largest Backlogs

South Korea’s leading shipbuilding companies have the five largest backlog of orders despite suffering from their worst ever deficits.

British maritime market researcher, Clarkson Research Services, said Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering’s Okpo shipyard had the largest backlog in the world with 131 ships waiting to be built as of the end of last month.

That shipyard had the largest backlog of ships last November and has remained in the top spot since.

Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan ranked second, followed by Samsung Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Geoje.

Meanwhile, Chinese shipbuilders placed between sixth and ninth, actively closing in on South Korean firms.
