96 Separated Families Reunited First Time after War

Anchor: Inter-Korean family reunions have resumed after a year and eight months. Families torn apart by the Korean War in the 1950s have reunited for the first time at a mountain resort in North Korea. Around 200 families will come together over the course of the reunions, where they will share gifts and stories that have been held back for more than six decades.
Our Kim Eun-ji has more.

Report: A total of 389 South Koreans on Tuesday traveled to Mount Geumgang in North Korea and met long-lost family members who they were forced to leave behind during the Korean War in the 1950s.

As more than half of the participants from the South are aged 70 or older, 20 medical workers and five ambulances traveled with the families and will accompany them until all participants return on Thursday morning.

Two elderly participants were transferred to the North via ambulance due to poor health

The current inter-Korean family reunions will bring together 186 families over two rounds. During the first round of reunions Tuesday, 96 families were reunited.

The second round will join 90 families from the South with their relatives in the North. The group of 255 South Korean participants will depart for Mount Geumgang on Saturday.

Participants will meet six times over the course of three days, with each meeting lasting for two hours.
