S. Korea, China Conduct Joint Crackdown on Illegal Fishing

Chinese government officials will board a South Korean patrol boat to conduct a joint crackdown on illegal fishing.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said the joint patrol will be carried out over five days beginning Wednesday to investigate illegal fishing in Exclusive Economic Zones.

Three Chinese government officials will board South Korea's Mugunghwa II, while three South Korean government officials will also join a Chinese Coast Guard vessel.

Patrol will center on waters near the Northern Limit Line in the West Sea and the Korea-China Tentative Co-management Zone where illegal fishing by Chinese boats occurs most frequently.

The joint patrols began in 2006 as a way for China to recognize the seriousness of illegal fishing.
