Gov't to Send Advance Team for Family Reunion This Week

An advance team that will finalize preparations for the 20th inter-Korean family reunions will head to Mount Geumgang in North Korea on Thursday.

Unification Ministry Spokesman Jeong Joon-hee told reporters on Wednesday that the 14-member team will be led by Bang Tae-young, a member of the South Korean Red Cross’s executive committee.

The team will carry out final inspections of reunion facilities and fine-tune last-minute details with North Korean officials.

The 20th South-North reunions of separated families will begin next Tuesday. In the first round of reunions, some 400 South Koreans from 97 families will take part. The second round will see the participation of some 250 South Koreans from 90 families.

Jeong said there are no special efforts being made to hold inter-Korean government-level talks. He said whether or not Seoul will propose holding such talks is a matter that should be reviewed taking into account inter-Korean relations.
