Factory Prices of Mobile Phones Dropped Under Revised Telecom Act

The gap in factory prices of mobile devices at home and abroad has significantly narrowed since a revised telecommunications law was put into force a year ago.

Ruling Saenuri lawmaker Park Min-sik, a member of the parliamentary committee on science, ICT, future planning, broadcasting and communications, presented the assessment on Monday during a parliamentary audit of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.

Park said that the domestic factory price of Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 was 169-thousand won larger than the price abroad, but the price gap decreased to 105-thousand won for the Galaxy Note 3 and 45-thousand won for the Galaxy Note 4.

The lawmaker said that the domestic factory price of Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note 5 was even five-thousand won cheaper than the price in global markets.

Park said that after the revision went into effect, consumers saw no need to press for high-end devices, lending to rising number of mid- and low-end mobile devices that are less than 600-thousand won.

Under the revised law, mobile device manufacturers must reveal factory prices of the mobile devices and mobile phone operators must disclose subsidy amounts on their Web sites or through their sale outlets.
