UN: Food Rations in N. Korea Half the Recommended Amount

A UN agency says that North Korea is supplying 250 grams of food in daily rations to its people for the second month since mid-July. The amount is less than half of the UN recommendation.

In a report Saturday, Voice of America cited a senior official at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as saying that North Korea continues 250 gram daily food rations per person from the previous 410 grams.

The amount is less than half of the 573 grams targeted by North Korean authorities and only 42 percent of the minimum 600 gram daily recommendation.

The UN agency believes continued drought in North Korea sharply reducing harvest is the main reason for the smaller rations.

According to the UN, the wheat and barley harvest dropped 32 percent this year to 36-thousand tons while the potato harvest is also down 20 percent to about 232-thousand-900 tons.
