Duty-free Tobacco Smuggled Illegally from Gaesong Complex on Rise

South Korea witnessed a sharp increase of smuggled tobacco and liquor from South Korean workers at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea.

According to data from the Unification Ministry, three cases were detected in 2014, but the number surged to 16 as of July this year.

Most of the detected items, nine of the 16 cases, were duty-free South Korean tobacco. The reason is attributed to the price hike in tobacco prices early this year.
