Youth Football Tournament Kicks Off in Pyongyang as Scheduled

Amid the heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, an international youth football tournament kicked off in Pyongyang as scheduled.

Jointly hosted by South and North Korean organizations, the under-15 football tournament opened at the Rungrado May Day Stadium, in the North Korean capital on Friday.

On the first day of matches, a team from South Korea's Gyeonggi Province beat China 3 to 1, but lost to the North Korean April 25 Sports Team, 3 nil.

And a squad from the South's Gangwon Province defeated powerhouse Croatia 1 nil.

Over 50-thousand North Korean spectators filled the stadium to cheer for the players.

Two teams from the South and two from North Korea will compete for the victory cup, along with four other teams, including China and Brazil. The tournament, which resumed for the first time in seven years, will continue through Monday.
