Mackerel Catch Soars 208% in H1 YoY

With the rising temperature of seawater, more fish living in warm currents are being caught in Korean waters such as mackerel and anchovy.

Statistics Korea data show that fishery output grew 220-thousand tons in the first half of this year, compared to the same period last year.

With the expanding force of the warm current and as more shoals of fish travel toward warmer southern oceans, catch of mackerel in the country's near sea waters has soared a whopping 208 percent.

Horse mackerel and anchovy catches have also jumped 167 and 16 percent, respectively. However, that of hairtail, typically caught in cold seas, plunged by 55 percent.

In the first half, output of deep-sea fishing fell close to four percent from the same period last year to 355-thousand tons.
