WFP's Aid to N. Korea Reaches 19-Month High

Food aid for North Koreans provided by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) has reached a 19-month high.

Voice of America (VOA) on Tuesday quoted WFP Regional Communications Officer for Asia Damian Kean as saying that the UN agency provided around three-thousand-230 tons of food for about 620-thousand North Korean children and pregnant women in July.

It is the largest amount that the WFP has delivered to the North through its monthly food aid since December 2013 and is more than double the amount delivered in June.

The food is produced by WFP and is rich in protein, vitamins and mineral, which many North Koreans lack access to.

Early in June, WFP announced that it would extend its nutrition assistance program for North Koreans by six months until the end of this year.

The target recipients of the program are one-point-eight million vulnerable North Korean citizens.
