N. Korea to Skip World Military Sports Event in S. Korea

North Korea has notified its decision not to attend an international military sports event to be held in South Korea’s Mungyeong City in North Gyeongsang Province in October.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said Sunday that the North’s sports education committee made the notification on Friday in a letter to the France-based organizer Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM). The North reportedly did not elaborate the reason for the absence.

The CISM World Games, a multi-sport event for military sportspeople, have been held since 1995 in Rome, Italy.

This year’s event is scheduled for a ten-day run from October 2 in Mungyeong. About 54-hundred people from 72 countries have signed up to take part in the 2015 CISM World Games Korea.

North Korea is one of 40 countries including Libya, Afghanistan, Laos and Mexico that have rejected invitations to attend the games.
