'N. Korea Changing Entrance Direction of Tunnels of Self-propelled Guns'

North Korea appears to be drilling entrances in a northward direction for its howitzer bunkers in some areas along the Yellow Sea.

A South Korean military official said on Sunday that some of the North’s artillery units in Hwanghae Province were observed to be drilling northward entrances of the bunkers for 170 millimeter self-propelled guns, while shutting down the existing southward entrances.

The North seems to be making the changes to better protect the bunkers from the South’s possible attacks.

The South Korean official, however, said that the direction of entrance does not matter because the South Korean military can easily destroy the guns when they are moved outside the bunkers for firing.

The official said that the North had often made northward entrances in the past and the South Korean military is ready to deal with them.

The South Korean military has K-9 self-propelled howitzers to counter the North’s self-propelled guns. It also has bunker busters and precision-guided joint direct attack munitions (JDAMs).
